Ex-candidate for the mayor of Port Hedland Ngarluma and Torres Strait Islander woman Telona Pitt said she is wary about the Indigenous Voice to Parliament and said it is an advisory body, with no veto or jurisdiction to actually make decisions and laws in regards to Aboriginal people.

The Indigenous Voice to Parliament is a representative body that would give Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people a say in legislation that passes through which is related to Indigenous people.

“It will be an advisory voice to the parliament that holds no veto and no jurisdiction to actually make decisions and laws in regards to Aboriginal people and issues”.

Pitt said The Uluru Statement of the Heart is a rebrand of the failed campaign Recognise and has relayed her concerns of the Indigenous Voice to Parliament in a codesign workshop that was held in Port Hedland. “What they showed in that co-design workshop is that they don’t have to listen to that voice… There is no accountability”
