A Western Australian education researcher says the state’s public school system is not working for students or teachers.

His comments follow a damning review into WA's public school system by the State School Teachers Union, which found that teachers are at breaking point.

The ‘Facing the Facts’ report recommended class sizes and teacher workloads be reduced, and education ministers consider replacing NAPLAN testing.

Curtin University Senior Lecturer Dr Saul Karnovsky says the ‘factory model’ of education is no longer fit for purpose.

“I just don’t think that what we are doing in our schools now really meets the needs of our diverse communities in terms of language, in terms of culture, any number of different kinds of criteria we can think about,” he said.

“We haven’t kept pace with the modern world, and I think young people see that.”
