After a two-week buildup of events, Goolari Media announced the winners to the 19th annual Kimberley Girl and Pilbara Girl competitions on Friday.

The Broome Advertiser says the crowns went to Karratha’s Margaret Ann Jimbidie, 16, and Halls Creek’s Jahn-Edda Petrevski, also 16 at the gala event.

The judges were looking for a vast range of qualities in the young girls including leadership, confidence, professionalism, natural poise and stage presence.

Ms Petrevski told Goolari Media that of all the Kimberley Girl workshops leading up to the main event, the Suicide Prevention workshop was the best.

“That just opened my mind up to realise that anything I say can offend someone else,” she said. “And that we always need to think before we speak. And they just taught us warning signs we need to be aware of. And I thought that was an eye-opening for me.”

Ms Jimbidie said she was returning to school with the confidence to follow her dreams.

“I really want to start working with doing construction work as an architect and building my own construction business,” she said. “To help out on the communities, to build youth programs maybe, and I also want to give a message out to people that beauty’s not on the outside and it’s very much on the inside.”
