This week, a Gunai poet and artist visited Ngarluma country in the Pilbara to lead conversations on art and creativity.

In Karratha, Kirli Saunders gave a talk and ran a visual poetry workshop for community members, organised by Wangaba Art Group and the City of Karratha.

A group of First Nations primary school students attended the workshop.

Ms Saunders says poetry can be used to share and preserve Indigenous languages.

“We need to celebrate and share and preserve our languages, because colonisation is continuous and we are continuously losing our old people who can speak and share those languages,” she said.

“We have a real need in this Decade of Indigenous Languages to be able to continue to protect and honour them.”
