FIRST NATIONS CONGRESSWOMAN DELIVERS MESSAGE IN PERTH

On Tuesday, United States Secretary of the Interior and First Nations Pueblo woman Debra Haaland spoke in Perth about using First Nations knowledge to fight the impacts of Climate Change. 

Secretary Haaland spoke at an event hosted by the Perth US-Asia Centre, which was attended by US Ambassador to Australia Caroline Kennedy and Curtin Academic and Minang Noongar woman Dr. Hannah McGlade.

Dr. McGlade said she supports Secretary Haaland’s work building relationships with First Nations Peoples and using Indigenous knowledge to fight climate change. 

‘‘She’s leading some really important reforms, in the United States, engaging with Indigenous Tribal Nations to address climate change,’’ She said.

‘‘This was a very significant event for Australia and for Western Australia to hear about the very progressive relationship building that’s happening in the U.S with Indigenous People’’.

Ms. Haarland is the first Native American woman to serve as a US Cabinet Secretary.
