YARRIE TEAM SHINES AGAIN AT LIVESTOCK CUP

A record 22 station teams competed for the seventh annual Pilbara Livestock Handlers' Cup on Friday.

People from stations all over the Pilbara and Kimberley converged on Sandfire Roadhouse to compete in the event dedicated to low-stress cattle handling.

Yarrie Sation’s team “Mulla Mulla” came in at first place, Roebuck Station second, and Sandfire third.

Zinidine Johnson from Roebuck plains came second along with Ben and Alex Mckenzie.

“It was alright … cruisy. We had a couple of strategies. We went through good but we got worried about the time and started rushing at the end,” he said.

The event is dedicated to low-stress cattle handling.

Teams of three took turns to draft out a small mob of cattle and run them quietly through an obstacle course, to a time limit.

The day before at a mini-field day they learned about disease control; new animal welfare regulations; and training dogs and cattle to get the best out of them.
