A growing number of Australian teenage boys are being extorted online by organised Crime Syndicates.

The victims are threatened with having explicit images of themselves transmitted over instant messaging services unless they pay large amounts of money.

LEO Heed is Specialist Programs Manager at Kids Helpline.

He says if your child or anybody you know is a victim of extortion it’s important to be supportive.

‘Our advice for parents is to really is to really try and be available and approachable,’’ He said.

‘‘Really speaking with your kids and children to make them aware that is could be something that they might become victim of.’’

Mr. Heed recommended rationality. He said, ‘‘If it does happen it’s important the parents remain calm, this is a situation that can be managed and letting the person know that its not their fault.’’
