Last year, young people from Ieramagadu/Roebourne created their own rap song ‘Roebourne Jam’ as part of the annual Songs for Peace workshops and concert.

Yuin hip hop artist Warren Foster Jnr and producer Stirling Blacket supported local young people to write, perform and record the song.

Songs for Peace is a community initiative led by arts organisation Big Hart. Each year, members of the community join in songwriting and music workshops with visiting musicians, culminating in an outdoor concert.

Local young people including Nina, Lyle, Sionel, Mathias, Laurianne, Karella, Tyrone, Sean, RJ, Haseem, Malakai and Trivon were involved in creating the track.

Nina said it was “really cool” to be part of the workshops and receive guidance from professionals.

“It was gangsta as man, just being in that environment,” she said.

“Warren [Foster Jnr] showed us how to have more confidence. Stirling [Blacket] showed me how to do things on my own but still ask for help when I need it.”

A music video for the song was filmed in Ieramagadu and will be released soon by Big Hart.

Listen to Nina and Lyle speak with Ngaarda Media’s Tangiora Hinaki about the process of creating ‘Roebourne Jam’.
