RANGER FOR LIFE PROGRAM REINVIGORATES EDUCATION FOR INDIGENOUS STUDENTS

The Ranger for Life program is making waves by re-engaging Indigenous students in their education. Designed to make learning more relevant and engaging, this program integrates cultural knowledge with practical skills and leadership training. "The goal is to give students a reason to be excited about school by showing them that what they learn is relevant to their life and community," said program coordinator, Giovanna Siale. By aligning education with students' backgrounds and real-life skills, Ranger for Life aims to foster a deeper connection to learning.

Combining Indigenous ecological knowledge with modern educational practices is a core component of the program. "Indigenous knowledge gives us a deep understanding of the local environment and how to care for it sustainably," explained activity coordinator Nicholas Armstrong.. This holistic approach creates a richer learning experience that brings together traditional wisdom and modern science, enhancing the educational journey for students. It is especially important as it instils a sense of stewardship and sustainability, key principles for both cultural preservation and environmental management.

The program is aimed at students from Year 4 through Year 10, providing them with project-based learning activities that build practical skills. Examples include water management projects where students test and learn about local water sources, community service activities like environmental clean-ups, and camps where they learn navigation, shelter-building, and survival skills. "These hands-on projects show students how their education applies to real-world problems," Giovanna added, highlighting the program's commitment to practical learning.

Ranger for Life is designed to work alongside traditional schooling, not compete with it. "Think of it as an additional layer that makes education more engaging and connected to real life," said Giovanna. By encouraging parental and community involvement, the program also aims to create a strong support network. Parents and community members can participate in events, workshops, or even mentor students, reinforcing the importance of education. With plans to expand, update the curriculum, and build stronger partnerships, Ranger for Life is set to continue evolving to meet the needs of students and their communities.
