Commonwealth Environment minister Tanya Plibersek is in the City of Karratha in WA’s Pilbara region for a two-day visit.

A spokesperson confirmed the visit had been prompted by an application for a Section 9 declaration under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act.

“I am carefully considering the application. I have made no decision,” Ms Plibersek said.

“I am visiting the Burrup Peninsula in Western Australia to meet directly with parties involved.

“This trip is for me to listen to groups involved in, and potentially affected by, any decision I make.”

While Ngaarda Media was unable to contact the Minister, we understand she was meeting Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation representatives and breakaway Traditional Custodian Raelene Cooper.

Ms Cooper and fellow Traditional Custodian Josie Alec have asked her to stop the proposed Perdaman fertilizer plant at the Burrup, which they say would destroy a further three ancient rock art sites.

The minister is due to leave Karratha later today.
