In the Pilbara, Paraburdoo is joining the growing number of towns to host a “Rowan’s Walk” this Saturday.

Organiser Ida Injie said this week was Mental Health Week and Rowan’s Walk was to raise awareness of mental health and suicide prevention.

“Before colonisation came we were connected to our culture, connected to our land,” she said. “We were healthy and happy. Now that a lot of stuff has happened to us we need to take care of our mental health so that we can continue to be healthy, happy and wealthy.”

The Paraburdoo walk starts at the Paraburdoo rubbish tip turnoff at 5am this Saturday, ending at Paraburdoo Memorial Gardens with a barbecue, speeches and light entertainment.

Rowan’s Walk continues where it began five years ago, in Hedland this Saturday.
