PANNAWONICA PANTHER'S 10-YEAR HIATUS ENDS WITH GAME AGAINST PARABURDOO PIRATES
Pannawonica Panthers Rugby League Club is back in action after a 10-year hiatus with an upcoming game against the Paraburdoo Pirates.
The game will be played on Saturday, June 24 at 7 pm on Pannawonica Oval.
Head coach of the Pannawonica Panthers, Gerry Fitzgerald has lived in Pannawonica for over 16-years and said rugby was popular 10-years ago, with the Wickham Wasps being one of the main teams the Panther’s played against.
Fitzgerald said that Karratha Roosters was the team to beat during those days.
“Back then the town was getting a refurb, so there was an abundance of players”.
Fitzgerald says the availability of players is an issue for the Panthers, with many players not able to play due to their working shifts meaning the North West League is out of the picture for now.
PANTHERS TO BE GREETED BACK WITH A WELCOME TO COUNTRY
Manager of the Panawonica panthers Taila Pye said local elder Tuesday Lockyer will be doing a welcome to country.
Pai said that 30-40% of players are indigenous players.
“It’s awesome for our community”.
