The Commonwealth Department of Environment has appointed a special reporter to investigate claims that human activity is threatening rock art at Murujuga, the Burrup Peninsula, and Dampier Archipelago.
Traditional custodian Raelene Cooper said the Department appointed a special reporter to investigate after she and Josie Alec made a complaint under Section 10 of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act.
“We’re hoping that good things come out of this and that we also hold Governments accountable, industry accountable, in terms of what our legislations and constitutions, content in the consitutions, an that they are complied with by all,” she said. “Whether it’s regulators, Government, industry, we all have to comply by these constitutions and legislation.”
