MURUJUGA CUSTODIANS ‘SHOCKED’

GEOFF VIVIAN

Traditional custodians say Federal Aboriginal Affairs minister Linday Burney and Environment minister Tanya  Plibersek are yet to respond to their calls to protect sacred rock art at Murujuga, the Burrup Peninsula.

Raelene Cooper said they were surprised the State Government had given works approval to the Perdaman gas plant, removing three rock art sites, before their own applications to protect the sites had been processed by the Commonwealth.

“We were very surprised, we still haven’t received any response from our applications and our enquiry into the matters that we’re relating to,” she said. “Definitely shocked that they would go ahead and give the green light when we still haven’t had our applications responded to by our ministers.”
