Australia’s most significant gathering of First Nations women began yesterday in Canberra at the Wiyi Yani U Thangani National Summit.

The summit has welcomed over 900 women for three days to discuss the approach to advancing the rights, health, safety, well-being and prosperity of First Nations women and girls.

Delivered by the Australian Human Rights Commission, the conference will see over 70 speakers and presenters guide delegates through a diverse range of topics including pathways to self-determination and the impacts of the proposed Voice to Parliament.

Building on previous work by the Commission, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner June Oscar said that this is a landmark event.

First Nations Women know what is needed to nurture and protect our families and communities,” she said.

“I thank all participants for bringing their wisdom and their truth to this historic gathering to help create a future where First Nations women and girls are driving economic and social change.”
