An Indigenous leader from the Kimberly has criticised the McGowan government’s pledge to reach a climate target of net zero emissions by 2050.

The proposed legislation will include an interim target to cut emissions by 80 percent below 2020 levels by 2030.

Nyikina Warrwa woman and Martuwarra Fitzroy River Council member Professor Anne Poelina said emissions targets aimed for 2050 are set too far in the future.

“I think it’s too far away, I think we need to be thinking about how we are going to right side our nation by 2030, which means how do we start to reduce our future emission between now and that period,” Poelina said.

“This is a climate emergency, we cant keep doing what were doing, extracting and creating these emissions.”
