Karajarri marathon runner Wynston Shovellor-Sesar.

Indigenous runners from across communities, towns and cities in Australia will travel to the United States this week to take part in the New York Marathon.

Karajarri man and Broome resident Wynston Shovellor-Sesar is one of this year’s participants who will run the race as part of the Indigenous Marathon Project.

Mr Shovellor-Sesar said he was drawn to running because it was challenging.

“I got into running because a very challenging sport,” he said. “It wasn’t really about competing it was more about trying to break down that cycle of partying, drinking, eating unhealthy. So I just wanted to be able to break that and change myself for the better.”

He said he had been training for months in preparation for the race.

“It’s my first ever so I’m quite nervous but I’m also excited that I have been given this opportunity and also with credits to my hard work and sticking to my training this last six months.”
