It is 39 years now since Roebourne teenager John Pat died after his arrest, sparking the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody.

Roebourne Police sergeant Dale Harmer said he was planning some kind of memorial to Mr Pat in the old cells behind the station.

“We’re looking at an option we can, with permission from the community, to put something there to try and dampen the sadness that’s come around that cell.”

Sen. Sgt Harmer said they would not proceed with the plan before consulting the community properly.
