A free program designed to teach homemaker skills such as cooking and cleaning will kick off in Ieramagadu/Roebourne next month.

The Jabaja Program will be run by the Salvation Army in conjunction with Rio Tinto and the Karatha Women's Refuge.

Salvation Army Program Coordinator Danielle Black said her goal is to empower the community by giving locals input and control over the program.

“We’re really hoping to help get it firmly established, and then maybe even finding a couple of amazing, strong people who start coming to then step forward, and we step back,” she said.

“We empower people, and then we are just in the background funding it and offering support.”

Classes will start on May 4 and will be offered fortnightly during the school term at the Roebourne PCYC kitchen from 10 am - 12 pm.
