HARNESSING AI TO PRESERVE INDIGENOUS CULTURES: A CALL TO ACTION BY KADO MUIR

In a world where technology is rapidly evolving, Kado Muir, a cultural leader and First Nations Australian entrepreneur, advocates for the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) as a tool for preserving Indigenous cultures.
Mr Muir emphasizes that AI has the potential to facilitate the transmission of cultural knowledge and practices, ensuring that Indigenous identities thrive amidst the digital revolution.
During a recent interview, Muir highlighted the importance of cultural protocols in AI development.
"The biggest challenge is that AI is largely being created by people who do not understand our cultural responsibilities,"
"As Elders, we have duties in how we pass on knowledge to future generations."
Mr Muir introduced the concept of Country Centered Design (CCD), which aims to incorporate traditional laws, customs, and cultures into the development of AI.
"This is a way in which our cultural practices are brought into the AI design process,"
He believes that, by establishing these protocols, Indigenous communities can ensure their cultural integrity is respected and maintained.
Mr Muir envisions a future where AI can aid in language preservation and cultural storytelling.
"I'm looking at creating an AI chatbot that can teach our language," he noted.
This approach aligns with a broader goal: to enable Indigenous communities to harness technology while safeguarding their spiritual and cultural responsibilities.
Despite the challenges, Muir is optimistic about the role of AI in cultural preservation. He acknowledges that Indigenous peoples have historically adapted to new technologies quickly.
"We need to ensure that technology serves us rather than undermines our culture," he urged.
Moreover, Mr Muir raised concerns about the appropriation of Aboriginal designs by AI-generated imagery.
"There's a risk of creating Aboriginal-informed designs that lack connection to our people and culture," he warned.
To address this, he calls for the establishment of protective measures that uphold cultural integrity within the tech space.
Mr Muir is committed to building networks and partnerships with Indigenous technology companies, aiming to empower Indigenous youth through education in technology.
"My vision is to bring our Dreamtime stories and cultural heritage into the tech world," he said.
As he advocates for the responsible integration of AI in preserving Indigenous cultures, his call to action resonates with the broader mission of Indigenous communities worldwide—to adapt to technological advancements while fiercely protecting their heritage and identity.
