GROWING SUNSHINE: KELLY HOWLETT'S GUIDE TO SUCCESS IN HEDLAND

In Hedland, a vibrant garden of sunflowers has captured the community’s attention, reaching an impressive height of nearly 2.2 meters. “I planted them during that small shower of rain we had in June, and they’ve just taken off,” Kelly Howlett. Nestled in a veggie bed enriched with pastry mulch, the sunflowers stand tall, easily visible from the street. This mulch provides vital nutrients and aids in moisture retention, allowing these striking flowers to flourish in their optimal growing environment.

Kelly’s enthusiasm extends beyond sunflowers as she cultivates various vegetables, including sweet corn, radishes, beetroots, and bok choy. “I love nothing better than going out to grab some fresh beans or beetroot leaves for a salad,” she says. With summer in full swing, the focus shifts to heat-tolerant plants, using natural resources like cow manure and worm tea. “It’s important to keep a thick layer of mulch to protect the soil from heat and weeds,” Kelly Howlett emphasises, showcasing a deep understanding of sustainable gardening practices.

However, gardening in the hot Pilbara does present challenges. “Those dry desert winds can really suck the moisture out of the leaves,” Kelly notes, mentioning the ongoing battle with pests like caterpillars and aphids. Yet, her resilience shines through. “Even with a few caterpillars, the flavour of homegrown produce is unmatched,” she states. With practical tips and a passion for growing, Kelly Howlett inspires others to embrace the joys of cultivating their own fresh food, proving that with care and creativity, gardening can thrive even in the toughest conditions.
