On Saturday, October 26, the Mid West community of Meekatharra transformed into a vibrant hub of creativity and culture as local volunteer models of all ages took the runway for the Barndi Mayu (Good Kid) Community Fashion Show.
The event marked the culmination of months of collaborative effort, including well-being and cultural workshops, model training, and community discussions.
This unique fashion show reflected the collective spirit of Meekatharra, where community members have come together to create everything from jewelry to clothing.
On the day of the event, local participants were also offered hair and makeup services, enhancing the creative atmosphere.
Musical selections curated by participants complemented the themed collections, which included Family, Springtime Sunshine, Blue by You Denim, Knowing Knots, and the Coloured Culture Collection.
Shannon McGuire, a Noongar woman and model associated with the Kirrikin Foundation, inspired participants through workshops leading up to the event.
Ms McGuire's collection featured during the show, and her attendance further elevated the significance of the occasion.
Timika King, a local musician and community leader, has played a pivotal role in bringing this vision to life.
“I just can’t wait to see the smiling faces of our Meekatharra community and to hear our people cheering them on,” she said before the event.
Ms King, who has extensive experience as a performer, acknowledged the challenges of stepping into the spotlight but emphasized the joy and pride the event fostered within the community.
This initiative was part of Mission Australia’s Communities of Focus program, aimed at enhancing community engagement, cultural connection, and long-term positive change in Meekatharra.
The project garnered support from various local organizations, including Youth Focus, Mid West Development Commission, Westgold, and the Rotary Club of Rockingham, showcasing a strong network of collaboration.
According to Mission Australia’s National Manager and a Proud Kamilaroi and Wiradjuri man, Shannon Thorne, the idea for the fashion show stemmed from a genuine desire to elevate the voices of the community.
“We got together and spoke to the community about what they wanted. There was so much happiness and laughter it was a real celebration of respect and creativity,” he said.
In addition to the runway show, a free takeaway dinner was provided for all participants and attendees, ensuring a warm and welcoming atmosphere for everyone involved.
The Barndi Mayu Community Fashion Show, embodied the spirit of Meekatharra highlighting the incredible talents and resilience of its community members.
