Yamatji-Noongar woman and WA Greens Senator Dorinda Cox has criticised Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for not attending the United Nations climate summit taking place in Egypt.

Senator Cox attended the first week of the COP27 climate summit, where world leaders discussed their progress on reaching climate targets.

She said Australia needs to get serious about climate change.

“Australia, as a regional and a global leader, did not turn up to provide a country statement on day one,” Senator Cox said.

“Our Prime Minister didn’t even attend.

“For me, that’s telling in the way of our actions as global leaders.

“[We should be] making sure that, when we talk about climate change and the impacts of climate change for our people here in Australia, we are turning up, showing up, and we are making sure that we are telling the story, and that we commit to how we are going to solve this.”

Senator Cox said Australia should contribute towards funding loss and damage that has already occurred because of climate change.

“We have an obligation as a developed nation to contribute to the global climate fund to fund the loss and damage that is happening both here in Australia but also regionally,” she said.

The COP climate talks conclude today.
