DERBY LIQUOR ACCORD MOTION UNSUCCESSFUL
A motion to change alcohol restrictions at the Derby Liquor Accord meeting earlier this week proved unsuccessful.
The meeting had originally been called to clarify terminology surrounding liquor restrictions in the town which were put in place on March 28.
However during the meeting, a licensee moved for Derby restrictions to be brought into alignment with the Broome Liquor Accord’s less-stringent restrictions.
When the motion came to a deadlock even vote, with no clear majority, the restrictions in their current form remained.
West Kimberley Shire President and Derby Liquor Accord Chair Geoff Haerewa said the Council hoped the motion could be supported in the future.
“The Council has a position that they don’t support the current restrictions, he said.
“The Council supports following the Broome Alcohol Accord Restrictions to align with Broome, however we didn’t get the vote. This is a democratic society so the proposal was not supported, however that doesn’t mean it can’t be supported in the future.”
