BREEDING TO SAVE RARE FROGS

In WA’s South West, Wildlife officers released 100 tiny frogs at a creek near Boranup Downs this week.

The tiny frog only grows up to 24 millimetres and is found in an area spanning about 130 square kilometres between Karridale and Witchcliffe.

WA Environment minister Rhys Whitby said scientists gathered wild eggs of the White Bellied Frog, raised them at Perth zoo, then returned them carefully to the country.

“We’re seeing DBCA and Perth Zoo collaborate to save a species, this is a critically endangered species,” he said.

This latest release of 100 frogs takes the total number reintroduced to more than 1,250.
