Born Alive Protection Bill brought back into the Spotlight
The National’s “Born Alive Protection Bill” is back in the spotlight after Stirling MP Vince Connelly threw his support behind the bill
The “Born Alive Protection Bill” aims to protect the rights of babies who show signs of life after the attempts of an abortion.
The bill would fine doctors up to $400 000 for not providing medical care.
While this incidence of aborted foetuses being born alive is at a low incidence, with 26 babies being born alive after abortion from 1999 to 2016, the bill has stirred controversy
Local Karratha pastor Frank Nicol said his first response was to be in support.
“As a Christian man I care for life… I want to care for life no matter what age”.
Nicol said that the bill brings up the larger discussion around the sensitive subject of abortion, and we need to support women who find themselves in this situation.
Member for Stirling, Vince Connelly says some states and territories don’t have clear guidelines about what treatment they should receive to keep them alive or to ease the baby’s suffering before they die.
“In purely a situation in where a baby is born alive, and the question becomes what care if any is that human child entitled to? What is the right thing to do?”
