An artist from Perth, Western Australia will share insights about songwriting at a free workshop in Karratha On Thursday, March 16.

Singer-songwriter Katy Steele will appear alongside Whadjuk Nyoongar pop duo The Merindas at the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA)’s Regional Sessions 2023 at the Red Earth Arts Precinct.

Ngaarda Media caught up with Ms Steele, lead singer of the band Little Birdy, to learn about APRA and how the organisation supports Australian artists.

“They look after all the songwriters in Australia and they basically help us collect our royalties,” she said.

“They also help us songwriters to connect with other people and they’re trying to create opportunities.”

Ms Steele also opened up about her past and some of the challenges she faced when she moved to the USA as she navigated the music scene and stepped into her solo career.

“It was quite a change for me,” she said.

“I moved over there and I kind of turned my back on the band and my label and my manager, so I kind of didn't really have much support over there. I was kind of trying to build from the ground up.”

Ms Steele also reflected on some career highlights with her band Little Birdy.

“We supported REM, and that was an arena show,” she said.

“That was like, ‘well this is amazing.’ But you know, we were just opening. We were the first band on, so you still feel like you want to be the main act.”
