WILUNA JUNIORS THRASH DALKEITH NEDLANDS
In Football, Wiluna Martu Eagles trounced the Dalkeith Nedlands Junior Football club 74 to 50 in the 14th annual Cultural Football weekend organised by the not-for-profit Murlpirrmarra Connection.
Murlpirrmarra Connection representative Darren Patten said the event was well supported.
“There would have been 300 or 400 people on Sunday,” he said. “And also the locals took us out and honey ants, caught some retail for the Dalkeith Nedlands participants. So it was another fabulous weekend really bringing those communities together.”
Mr Patten said the annual fixture had an unusual origin.
“It all literally started with a bet back in 2008 between a metallurgist who’s our director on our Murlpirrmarra Connection board, Peter Dawson, and Mick Wilson who’s a former director of ours,” he said. “He was with Golden West Resources. And Mick said: ‘these Wiluna kids will beat the Dalkeith kids any day of the week’. So Peter who was on the committee of Dalkeith Football Club at the time said: ‘OK, done, let’s do it’ so they brought the Wiluna kids down to Perth in 2009 so they’ve gone from there ever since.”
