WALK FOR BRODY TO HONOUR NOONGAR MAN’S LEGACY

A mother continuing her son’s legacy has created ‘Walk for Brody’, an event to be held this Saturday on Noongar boodja to raise funds that will create well-being opportunities and scholarships for those in need.

Whadjuk Noongar man Brody Wood Kenney, who died last year at the age of 22, was a police officer determined to make a difference by bridging the gap between police and community.

Now, after his passing, his mother Sharon Wood Kenney is continuing his legacy with the Brody Kenney “Sonshine” legacy program that offers a range of scholarships.

Ms Wood Kenney said Brody made important achievements during his time in the WA police force.

“He was actually awarded the WA Police Medal,” she said.

“We actually got it on the day of his funeral. The Commissioner at the time passed it over to us and spoke about Brody’s integrity and his respect for the job.”

Ms Wood Kenney said Brody’s work had formed the basis of WA Police’s new Cultural and Diversity Immersion Training.

This Saturday 18th, ‘Living our Best Life - Walk for Brody’ will take place on the first anniversary of his passing, departing from Hilary’s beachfront at 3.30 pm.

The walk will conclude at Mirror Park in Ocean Reef with a Cleansing Ceremony, before a festive celebration with live music, food trucks and coffee vans.

Ms Wood Kennedy said the walk was originally planned just for family and friends to come together “to help heal”, but now “it’s just gathered momentum” and become an event for the whole community.
