SOUTH WEST RANGERS SHOOT FOR TOP AWARD

Wayne Webb received a WA Landcare award last year on behalf of the Undalup Association cultural conservationists.

In the South West, the Undalup Association has been nominated for a National Indigenous Landcare award.

Chairman Zac Webb said he had worked as Murujuga Ranger Coordinator at the Burrup Peninsula, before returning to his own county to work as a Park Ranger.

He then had the idea of starting an Indigenous Ranger program for his own Capes country.

He said his rangers liked to be known as “cultural conservationists”.

“So as they are conserving, looking after, protecting country,” he said. “It’s basically a role and responsiblity of what it is to be an Aboriginal person and to look after the animals and plants and the things that are connected to our kinship and family systems.”

The national 2022 KPMG Indigenous Land Management Award winner will be announced next month in Sydney.
