Songwriting workshops began in Ieramagadu/Roebourne this week in preparation for the annual Songs for Peace concert.

The workshops and concert are coordinated by arts organisation Big Hart.

Songwriter and musician David Hyams has facilitating songwriting workshops in the town and local prison for several reasons and returned to Roebourne this week.

Mr Hyams said the workshops had got off to a good start.

“We’re trying to get as much of the community involved as possible,” Mr Hyams said.

The general idea is to get people involved in the process and let them learn a few skills along the way.”

Listen to Mr Hyams speak to Ngaarda Media’s Chez Coulthard about the songwriting process and his experiences with the Roebourne community:

Community members can join in the workshops on Monday 21 August and Tuesday 22 August at the Big Hart Digital Lab from 3 pm - 5 pm. All are welcome.

Songs for Freedom will be going on tour to visit Melbourne and Canberra next month.

Songs for Peace will take place on 23 September at the Ngurin Centre in Roebourne.
