POETS CLUB WILL HOST ABORIGINAL LYRICISTS IN ADELAIDE

Melanie Mununggurr Williams is the first ever Indigenous Australian Poetry Slam Champion!

Melanie Mununggurr, a Djupu woman from North East Arnhem land is a Slam Poetry Champion. Ms Mununggurr will perform tonight and tomorrow evening at The Poets Club with Hope One.

Slam Poetry is a unique form of storytelling that combines elements of poetry and theatre in a dynamic way. The genre’s origins can be traced back to Chicago in the early 1980s. These days you can hear slam poetry in venues worldwide, including in our backyard.

“When I won the Australian poetry slam in 2018, I performed two poems one is called double threat, which is a poem about being black and being a woman, Ms Mununggurr said.

‘I performed that in front of an audience of mostly white males and it was very uncomfortable for me, I had my daughter in the audience with my mum and it was a reminder of why it's important to think about these issues and to speak my truth.”

Melanie will perform with other Aboriginal Poets at the “Poets club with Hope One ''.

It kicks off tonight at the Tandanya Cafe in Adelaide.

You can also find her poetry on YouTube and on the Red Room Poetry website.
