An independent reporter appointed by the government to investigate threats to heritage at Murujuga, the Burrup Peninsula will be in the Pilbara this week.

Reporter Alison Stone will spend time in Karratha, Roebourne and Dampier to discuss the application to protect Murujuga under section 10 of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act.

Section 10 applicant and Marduhunera woman Raelene Cooper from the group Save Our Songlines said she is asking for a stop to further industrial development on the Burrup.

”There are a few industries out there that are really causing a lot of harm to our environment, to the animals and to our most important sacred sites,” Ms Cooper said.

Save Our Songlines will hold a barbeque in Roebourne on Friday which Ms Stone will attend.

Ms Cooper says the event will provide community members a chance to share their concerns.

“Everybody in the community, everyone, is welcome,” she said.

“This is not about Native Title, this is not about race, this is about us coming together as people to protect something that’s deserving of protection.”

The Save Our Songlines barbeque takes place from 5 pm on Friday at Andover Park in Roebourne.
