ROWAN'S WALK IN PARABURDOO RAISES AWARENESS FOR SUICIDE PREVENTION AND MENTAL HEALTH
BY ASAD KHAN
On Sunday, October 13th, the community of Paraburdoo came together to participate in Rowan’s Walk, an annual event dedicated to raising awareness of suicide and mental health challenges.
Named after Rowan, who found solace in walking from Port Hedland to South Hedland after the tragic loss of his Aunty to suicide, the event honors those who have taken their own lives, while also creating a supportive network for those affected by suicide.
Rowan’s Walk serves as both a tribute to the memory of loved ones lost and an opportunity to break down the stigma surrounding suicide.
Through this communal gathering, participants aim to bring the conversation of mental health into the light, emphasizing the importance of human connection and support.
Audra Smith, President of the Shire of Ashburton, expressed her support on social media, stating: “It was an honour to participate in Paraburdoo Rowan's Walk this morning, standing in solidarity with this important cause.”
“As we walk together, we not only raise awareness but also strengthen our community’s support for mental health. Every step we take is a reminder of the power of connection, resilience, and the importance of looking out for one another,
“Let’s continue to champion mental health, break down stigma, and ensure that no one walks alone in their journey.”
The event not only commemorated those lost to suicide but also acted as a platform to bring mental health issues to the forefront.
By walking hand in hand, participants demonstrated the strength of community and the collective need for compassion and understanding in supporting those struggling with mental health challenges.
The impact of Rowan’s Walk continues to grow, offering a safe space for reflection, healing, and unity, while calling for more open discussions and actions surrounding mental health in Western Australia and beyond.
