In the Pilbara, the Robe River Kuruma Aboriginal Corporation has released a short film to call for protection of the Bungaroo waterway and aquifer.

The film, titled ‘Bungaroo’, was filmed on country near Pannawonica and includes interviews with Elders and community members.

Traditional owners featured in the film say overuse of the Bungaroo water supply for industrial use has had cultural, spiritual and environmental impacts.

Elder Tuesday Lockyer said Robe River Guruma people have an obligation to protect the water source.

“Water is a lifeline, not only for the river itself, but for everything that depends on the water: the country itself, trees, animals, and for us, too, because [water has] big cultural significance for us,” she said.

The short film can be viewed on the Robe River Kuruma website.
