RIO TINTO HOSTS CAREERS EXPO TO BOOST LOCAL EMPLOYMENT
BY ASAD KHAN
Rio Tinto will hold its inaugural Careers Expo in Wickham. The event aims to connect job seekers from Wickham, Roebourne, and Point Samson with employment opportunities across the company and more than 15 of its contract partners.
The expo, which will take place at the Wickham Hub tomorrow from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., is open to Indigenous community members, partners of Rio Tinto employees, Year 11 and 12 students, and recent graduates.
The event is designed to help local residents explore career pathways in the Pilbara and access information about jobs in mining and associated sectors.
Attendees will have the chance to meet directly with Rio Tinto representatives and a range of contracting companies offering entry-level roles across various departments.
The event's focus is on helping participants understand the types of jobs available locally and what skills and certifications—such as White Cards and safety qualifications—are required to pursue them.
In an effort to ensure accessibility, the expo has been scheduled in the evening to accommodate shift workers, and a bus service will transport Roebourne community members to and from the Cape Lambert site.
Practical support will be available through apprenticeship centres and representatives from the ATAL program, who will guide on how to apply for traineeships and upcoming job opportunities.
Rio Tinto General Manager Ports Cape Lambert, Paulo De Ponte, said the event is about removing barriers to employment and opening up new conversations.
“We know many people in our local communities want to work with us but are not sure where to start,” he said.
“Our Careers Expo is about breaking down those barriers, creating connections between Rio Tinto, our contract partners and community members, and opening a door to real job opportunities. I look forward to connecting with people at the expo.”
The event marks a new initiative by Rio Tinto to support local employment and strengthen relationships with communities in the Pilbara.
