RATA NEWS: ELEVATING INDIGENOUS VOICES FOR DECOLONIZATION
Wayne Wharton and Derek Tipper are leading Rata News, a new media platform dedicated to amplifying Indigenous voices and sharing untold stories that are often ignored by mainstream outlets.
Inspired by the traditional practice of smoke signals, Wayne explains that Rata means "smoke" in Torres Strait, symbolizing communication and the transmission of important messages. "It connects us to our ancestors who used smoke to alert people to danger, and that’s what we aim to do today," he says.
One of Rata News’s main goals is to address the shortcomings of mainstream media, which, according to Wayne, perpetuates colonial narratives. "By failing to report on the real issues we face, they are reinforcing the illegal occupation of this land," he asserts. Rata aims to provide a platform where Indigenous stories are told from within the community.
Derek Tipper, a journalist with Rata News, is working on an investigation into the violent repression of Kanak people in New Caledonia. "Over 40 lives have been lost, and the mainstream media has ignored it," Derek explains. Rata is committed to reporting on these stories, ensuring they are told with the urgency and respect they deserve.
The platform also seeks to promote the recognition of Indigenous sovereignty. Wayne emphasizes, "We are negotiating with the 150 states in the UN to be recognized as independent nations." This drive for decolonization is central to Rata News’s mission, which also includes supporting Pacific Island communities and raising awareness of their struggles for justice.
As Rata News prepares to launch its next edition, Wayne and Derek are gearing up for a powerful presence on Invasion Day, continuing their fight for justice and sovereignty. "We’ll be with our countrymen, sharing our stories, and standing strong for freedom," says Wayne.
Rata News is an essential new voice in the fight for Indigenous rights, ensuring that the stories of Indigenous peoples are heard and respected.
