MOVE TO INDIGENOUS BAKERY PARTNERSHIP

Ngarluma Aboriginal Corporation is negotiating a 51 percent equity deal in an established Karratha Bakery.

Emil Moul, who is CEO of the Native Title group, said it was part of a new commercial strategy to add value to the group’s usual revenue streams such as royalties.

“Things like Welcome To Country, mining tenements, expression tenements, ILUA’s … and elevate the revenue streams to on a commercial basis and that would allow us to create a revenue stream beyond royalties because as you know we get royalties from RTIO,” he said.

Pilbara Bakehouse director Laurie Miller said he set up the existing business in Karratha after running a successful bakery at Exmouth for 13 years.

Mr Miller said he had introduced freshly-baked bread and other products to the Pilbara.

“Previously, there was frozen product available. We have been able to offer an alternative. Currently, we have delivery vehicles which distribute right through to seven towns through the Pilbara.”

While the deal was yet to be finalised, both said they expected it would also create employment opportunities for Ngarluma people.
