INDIGENOUS WOMAN WINS CANARVON FEATURE RACE

An Aboriginal jockey won the Canarvon Racing Club feature race last weekend while the club held the first-ever indigenous race day.

The lady’s day event included artwork from five families put together in a mural, fashions on the field, and a welcome to country

The day recognised people that had contributed and are still contributing to racing.

First Nations jockey, Peta Edwards, made the day even more special with a win in the feature race of the day.

“I was really proud to be part of the day, Canarvon is the first racing club in Australia to actually do something like this and represent indigenous people in racing and those that have been involved in racing. For me to win the feature event on the day was the icing on the cake.”

“Racing on Country” has been trademarked by Carnarvon Racing Club and they plan to hold a racing event like this at least once per season much like the indigenous rounds in other sports. Tessa Daly from Canarvon Race Club said, “Some of the artwork from the murals may even be made into colours for future race events.”

She went on to say she wants to be the first Race Club to recognise an indigenous round and have a welcome to country on the first race meet of each season.”

Ms Edwards said, “Being the first indigenous race meeting that would have to go up on my top picks for a day to win a race like that.”

“It was probably one of the proudest moments of my whole racing career.”
