PARDON SPARKS CALL FOR INQUIRY
This week’s State pardon and apology for Tamika and Ted Mullaley, who were arrested trying to prevent the abduction and murder of Tamika’s baby son Charlie, has sparked a call for further action.
Noongar woman, lawyer and academic Hannah McGlade wants a State Parliament inquiry into murdered and missing Indigenous women and girls.
Associate Professor McGlade says WA has Australia’s highest murder rate for Aboriginal women.
“The murder rate, according to Telethon Kid’s Institute research some years ago of an Aboriginal mother, was that she was 17 and a half times more likely to be murdered,” she said.
Ass. Prof. McGlade said more than 2000 people had signed a petition demanding an inquiry into issues such as Tamica’s case, the way she was racially profiled and how it contributed to Charlie’s horrific death.
