Nullagine, WA — The Ýirrunkadji Sports Courts were officially opened on December 5, marking a significant milestone in the enhancement of community and recreational infrastructure for the town.

The $1.278 million project promises to provide residents with additional opportunities to engage in sports and adopt healthy lifestyles.

The opening ceremony was attended by local Member for the Pilbara Kevin Michel and Shire President Anthony Middleton, followed by a community celebration. A Welcome to Country was delivered by Mr. Walter Stream on behalf of the Palyku-Jartai Aboriginal Corporation.

The Ýirrunkadji Sports Courts project was first identified in November 2021 as part of the Strategic Recreation Master Plan developed by the Shire of East Pilbara.

The facility is intended to foster community connections and promote physical health through shared recreational activities.

“Sports play a crucial role in uniting communities, promoting physical and mental well-being, and offering young people the chance to develop valuable skills and confidence,” said Mr Michel.

“I’m thrilled to see the Ýirrunkadji Community Sports Courts becoming a central hub for local athletes and fostering a sense of community pride and togetherness,

“I’m excited to witness the lasting positive impact this facility will have on youth development and the broader community for many years to come.”

Shire President Anthony Middleton highlighted the collaborative funding efforts that made the project possible, including a $421,245 grant from the state government’s Community Sport and Recreation Facilities Fund and additional contributions from the Shire of East Pilbara.

“This grant has enabled us to build this wonderful facility, and funding for such important infrastructure helps us serve the community by offering health and fitness options for the residents of Nullagine,”

“As part of the Shire’s commitment to significant investment in sport and recreation infrastructure in Nullagine, we hope this space will be well utilized as a gathering place for all to enjoy and come together as a community.”

The Ýirrunkadji Sports Courts are expected to serve as a hub for physical activity, social interaction, and community development in the years to come.
