CARNARVON RACE CLUB LAUNCH INDIGENOUS RACE MEET WITH ‘WELCOME TO COUNTRY’ TO KICK OFF SEASON
The Carnarvon Race Club this year has launched a first of its kind First Nations race meet to be held this Saturday at the Carnarvon Race club grounds.
The event will highlight Indigenous people, from jockeys having their first rides, trainers, starters, stewards, strappers and the rich history of the racing industry in the Gascoyne.
The Carnarvon Race Club was established in 1883 and they believe that they are the first club nationally to deliver a Welcome To Country.
Ingaarda woman Rennee Turner told Ngaarda Media that it was time to showcase Aboriginal history in the racing industry and is excited about a mural that has been created representing the five language groups.
“If you looked at our actual mural, its got five language groups and it has the five-race groups. Ms Turner said. The Carnarvon Race club is proud and humbled to be the first Australian race club to officially recognise the Indigenous custodians of land and to establish an Indigenous race meeting as our first race meeting of the season.”
Ms Turner will deliver the Welcome To Country and Indigenous jockey Rozy Bynder will emcee the event.
