NICKY WINMAR COURAGEOUS STANCE AGAINST RACISM, 30 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Thousands gathered in Naarm on Wurundjeri country last night to mark the 30th anniversary of AFL legend Nicky Winmar’s famous display of courage and triumph against racism.

During a 1993 game between St Kilda and Collingwood, Winmar famously responded to abuse from the crowd by pointing to the color of his skin and stating: “I’m black and I’m proud to be black.”

Warundjeri man, Colin Hunter IV supported his father in the Welcome to Country ceremony and was three years old when Mr Winmar’s protest took place.

“10,958 days; 1,561 weeks." 360 months, 30 years.” he said. “I was three years old when a remarkable man took a powerful stance. I was too young to understand back then.

“I for one, got to watch this amazing footballer do what he does by inspiring young people to enjoy the game he played well.”

At last night’s healing ceremony, an emotional Winmar addressed the crowd.

“It’s a privilege, to know that we are supported by Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. Thank you so much. My grandkids are here tonight, so good to see you. You mean the world to me. You are the next generation. It’s time for it to stop, enough is enough—black and proud!"
