NGARLIANDU BINDIRRI ABORIGINAL CORPORATION TO TAKE ON ROEBOURNE POST OFFICE
A local Aboriginal corporation will take on the Roebourne Post Office license.
Ngarliandu Bindirii Aboriginal Corporation (NBAC) will begin providing the service from March 5.
NBAC CEO Francois Langlois says the corporations Centrelink office will be renovated to provide postal services at the same location.
“Our plan is to co-locate the post office counter next to our Centrelink officers in the front office and our office,” CEO Francois Langlois explained.
“We actually need to do a little bit of refurbishment and redo some work to our premises before that can start.
“Australia Post has been very kind to us in relocating what they call a mobile van which will be able to operate the post office services for the next eight weeks or so until we're finalized and finish all the refurbishment we need to do in preparation for having everything within our premises.
”We're hoping that comes about mid May or ther’re about, everything will be finalised. We'll have a new Australia Post counter. We're going to have items for sale. You know, a bit of a shop.”
The current Post Office, situated on Sholl Street, will close at the end of this week, as owner-operator Garry Bailey is retiring after 36 years in the role.
Ngarluma elder David Walker said the postal service was important for the town.
”It’s important for local elders and those who dont have a vehicle,” he said.
