New Minister of Aboriginal Affairs, Linda Burney

NEW PM ELECTED

Anthony Albanese was elected as the 31st Prime Minister of Australia over the weekend. The election showed a swing in votes towards Labour and Independents. In a rousing speech where he had to ask for his supporters to calm down, Albanese began by committing to the Uluru Statement to the Heart. 


DURACK CANDIDATE RETAINS

Liberal Party MP for Durack Melissa Price narrowly retained her seat over Labor Party candidate Jeremiah Riley with an 11.3% swing towards labor. She told the ABC she would raise issues as the opposition in the best way she can.


AFL DOUG NICOLLS ROUND

In the AFL, the Doug Nicholls indigenous round was played on the weekend with teams wearing jerseys designed by local aboriginal artists. Fremantle player Michael Walters designed his team’s jersey and was selected to play in the side over the weekend after being dropped last weekend. Traditional owners were also recognised off the field and the Melbourne Football club changed its name to the traditional name ‘Naarm.’ 


COUNCILLOR UNABLE TO VOTE 

Newman councilor Anita Grace told Ngaarda media on Saturday that she was unable to vote due to being in a Perth hospital on election day. 


HEADS OF AGREEMENT A FORWARD STEP FOR PKKP

The PKKP Aboriginal Corporation has signed non-binding heads of agreement (HOA) with Rio Tinto which will guide the ongoing development and finalization of co-management of mining for the lands of the Puutu Kunti Kurama and Pinijura (BINI- GURRA)  peoples. 


MINERS TIGHTEN BOOZE POLICY

Workers in WA’s resources sector will be limited to four-daily drinks under a new universal FIFO booze policy rolled out on Monday for mine sites.
