In the Pilbara, the Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation, or MAC, has said it would like to discuss a review of the binding state agreement it was formed out of.

The Burrup and Maitland Industrial Estates Agreement (BMIEA) was a contract made in 2002 between the state government and Traditional Custodians which extinguished native title rights over the Burrup in exchange for freehold land and other benefits.

The agreement, made in the context of compulsory acquisition, contains a ‘no objections clause’ that means MAC can not approve or disapprove of industrial development on the Burrup Industrial Estate.

“MAC would welcome the opportunity to discuss a review of the BMIEA with the state,” a spokesperson for the corporation said.
