Jawoyn and Wiradjuri woman Kristal Kinsela has conquered Mt Everest, Kathmandu, Nepal, after seven days of trekking 65 kilometres.

“Our group of 11 raised over $61k for the Black Dog Institute”, Ms Kinsela said. In our campaign to raise awareness and funding to support First Nations people affected by mental health and suicide.”

Ngaarda Media’s Cassie Ariuu spoke with Kristal Kinsela about her preparation schedule.

“If you came to set a goal, I think you just lock in, and then do your research and get it underway and make it happen. Anything is possible.

This was no easy feat. Whilst I felt physically prepared, there was no way I could have prepared myself for the altitude and the freezing cold conditions (at times -12 degrees)

Personally, this is the toughest challenge I’ve ever experienced. Mentally, spiritually, physically and emotionally. I was tested in more ways than I could have imagined.

Kristal Kinsela explained how the Blaktrekkers supported each other.

“What got us all through was the Blaktrekkers working collectively as a team. Like a family we rallied round to support each other, sharing food, yarns, aqua tabs, diamox and anything else we needed. Blak humour goes along way as well and the creation of Big Ole productions.”

She completed her mission to conquer the legendary Mount Everest Base Camp while championing the cause of the Black Dog Institute. 🏔️🌟

Kristal said, “You are stronger than what you think and don't give up, and you know, seek the support of those that are around you at any point in time in your life.”
