In the Pilbara, WA Hydrogen minister Alannah MacTiernan said a renewable hydrogen plant to be built at Murujuga, the Burrup Peninsula, would ultimately help preserve the priceless rock art.

“We’re very keen to get more renewables projects up there,” she said. “The more that we can get on the path of replacing fossil fuel with renewable energy and the on-processing of that renewable energy the better it is for the rock art.”

Ms MacTienan said although this demonstration power plant would be on Yarra Fertiliser’s Murujuga block, she was working towards having large scale renewable energy generation facilities at the Maitland Estate 15km south.

“But you need to start,” she said. “You need to get these projects up and show that we’re moving solidly towards the ability to eventually de-carbonise our economy.”
