In Roebourne, local Elders have spoken out about the issue of Elder abuse.

Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, marked all over the world to bring respect to Elders.

Yindjibarndi-Banjima Elder Dennis Long, also known as Bango, said those who abuse their Elders should show more understanding.

“Whatever language group we are, we all know the Lore and Culture,” he said.

“That should be within us, or within them, to understand more and respect their Elders.”

Yindjibarndi Elder Tootsie Daniel said Elders contribute a lot to the community.

“Being Lore and Culture people, they teach young people about their Lore ceremonies and they teach young people about the songs and the land and Country,” she said.

“They teach young people how to behave, how to love and how to respect.

“Young people, they should salute to Elders.”
