Labor Member for the Pilbara Kevin Michel has said outgoing Premier Mark McGowan will be missed as a strong advocate for the North West region.

“In my 21 years, this is the first time I’ve seen a Premier and Ministers coming to the Pilbara so often, engaging with the people and listening to people,” he said.

“He did try his level best to make sure that the Pilbara got a fair share for everything.

“He made sure the Pilbara people always had a voice.”

Yesterday, the WA Labor Party formally endorsed Roger Cook as its leader.

Mr Cook reportedly spent part of his first day in the role yesterday receiving a briefing on the issues plaguing Banksia Hill Youth Detention Centre.

Mr McGowan will officially resign on Thursday when Mr Cook will be sworn in as Premier.
